The Gift Born That Day

Updated: Jan 17

As I sat one day pondering the messages I was hearing in Christmas songs, I became increasingly saddened at the lack of depth I gleaned from they lyrics. I felt that I wanted to write a Christmas song that had a little more depth to it. One that reflected the seriousness and significance of the prophesied gift born from above. The savior was born so he could live life on this earth like we did, yet without sin, and then die in our place, so that we could be redeemed and live with him for eternity. After I wrote the song, the following Christmas season, I showed it to my boss (Mark Winstead, the Minister of Music at our Church, Pleasant Valley South Baptist Church). He decided to give it to the director of our orchestra (Bill King) and have him write an orchestration so our orchestra could accompany us. There was also a small children's choir part in it. I must confess, I had two of my granddaughters sing the children's choir part on the demo, and it ended up being a bit high for our church's children's choir. I was also able to have Cindy Roberts sing the soprano demo. Mark Winstead sang the tenor, I sang the alto and Rick sang the bass. It was a thrill to have our church choir, orchestra and children's choir, sing & play this song.
